What is Williams syndrome?

Williams syndrome is a rare genetic condition that is present from birth and can affect anyone. It is caused by a small missing piece of chromosome 7, in an area known as 7q11.23. It affects roughly 1 in 7,500 to 10,000 people.

How it affects people

Williams syndrome affects many parts of the body. Heart and blood vessel problems are common and can be serious, along with developmental delays, learning challenges, anxiety, and other medical needs that often require lifelong care.

What makes it unique

People with Williams syndrome are often known for being extremely friendly and social, with strong verbal skills and a deep connection to music. Many families describe a warmth and openness that draws people in.

Why awareness matters

Because it is so rare, Williams syndrome is often unknown to the public, and sometimes even to doctors and educators, which can delay diagnosis and support. May is Williams Syndrome Awareness Month.
